The Country Doctor Museum

The Country Doctor Museum’s original building was built from two 19th century country doctor’s office buildings. Now known as the “Freeman-Brantley Building,” this historic structure houses the museum’s displays on pharmacy, surgery, and a turn-of-the-20th-century sick room.

Feminine Flair!

Feminine Flair: Wellness & Advertising in the Victorian Era at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine

The museum recently installed a new exhibit, “Feminine Flair: Wellness & Advertising in the Victorian Era,” on ECU’s campus in Greenville.

Artifact ABC's

The Country Doctor Museum installed “Artifact ABC’s” at East Carolina University’s Family Medicine Center. The display light-heartedly showcases an eclectic collection of objects from the museum selected purely by the first letter of the object name. The museum staff had a great time finding artifacts to represent each alphabet letter, especially Q, Y, and Z!

Make Haste!

Take a quick peek at a new collection of artifacts now on display in our transportation cabinet. These medical emblems or medallions were attached to car license plates by doctors, pharmacists, and nurses earlier in the 20th century. The emblem would signify to local law enforcement that the car speeding through town or double-parked belonged to a medical professional most likely on an urgent call.

The Country Doctor Museum is truly a treasure. I’ve driven past the sign to this place for years and finally got the opportunity to stop and visit. I wish I had been years ago … but glad I stopped today.

This is a gem of a museum! Tons of artifacts and info presented in a very digestible format through engaging docents and easily readable signs. Great curation – they feature a number of doctors from ENC (including black doctors) and have a well-balanced historical perspective. I look forward to coming back!

An excellent museum with extremely knowledgeable staff. A great example of how to turn a small collection into an informative (and fun) experience. You’ll be treated to a great tour that includes a lesson in 19th century pill manufacturing and getting to see a mid-20th century iron lung. A really fantastic way to spend an afternoon…

This is a great little hidden gem. My wife and I have passed the sign on Hwy 264 many times and finally decided to stop today. We’re glad we did …
